93 POINTS | Cameron Douglas MS
Zinfandel is very rarely grown in NZ, with most of it grown in California or in Italy as Primitivo. However, Stonecroft have a few rows of it at their Roy's Hill vineyard and (The oldest zinfandel vines in NZ!) and create a small parcel of it each year. WIth a cooler climate here in NZ compared to Italy and California, this release is a more medium-bodied style but those red fruit flavours are still there in force.
Cameron Douglas MS writes "This example has aromas of fresh cherries and boysenberries, crushed blackberries and black plums. There’s plenty of barrel smoke and wood aromas with vanilla and baked coconut scents. Very youthful, very inviting. On the palate - plush, fruity, youthful, tense and dry. Flavours mirror the nose with ripe fruits then a transition into slightly tarter expressions of the same - this would be classic in northern Californian versions as well - bringing greater palate expression and mouthfeel. Plenty of youthful acidity with moderate tannins. A fine example, warm, generous and tasty. Perfect alternative to Merlot and some Pinots Noir."
The winery writes "Our Zinfandel is a medium bodied red with a fruity bouquet and flavours of raspberry, rhubarb and cranberry, together with coconut on the finish and soft tannins. The fruit is handpicked from just a few rows in our Roy’s Hill Vineyard."
