Smith and Co Pinot Grigio 2016

Smith and Co Pinot Grigio 2016

Marlborough, New Zealand
Tangy, dry Pinot Gris from Steve Smith MW - the man who drove the winemaking programme for Craggy range for many years. Now producing wine under his own banner he is making some exciting, interesting variations on the classic New Zealand varietals and this is a lovely expression of dry Marlborough Pinot Gris. The slick packaging promises much and the wine delivers an intelligent counterpoint to the more traditional Gris styles with concentrated fruit characters underpinned with fine acidity and some exotic spice flavours. This is food wine in the true sense and comes highly recommended for discerning dinner tables.

Description

The winery writes "Made from 100% Pinot Gris from a high altitude, single vineyard parcel located on the southern banks of the Awatere River in Marlborough. This low cropping vineyard was hand harvested and the grapes were whole bunch pressed before being cool fermented in a stainless steel tank followed by a four month period on lees to add a lovely talcum powder like texture to the wine. The GRIGIO 2016 is a delicate, lighter framed dry wine hence our reference to the more common Italian name for wines made from Pinot Gris. The nose is delicately perfumed with notes of freshly cut golden peaches, yellow flowers and straw. The palate is similarly delicate and dry with notes of dried stonefruit, sweet gala apples, some lovely baked spice and finishing long and dry. A great match with roasted lemon herb chicken, or ancient grain or couscous salads with spiced roasted vegetables."
