WINERY CLEARANCE | Bin End Superbuy
The small winery on the outskirts of Havelock North that was once known as Red Barrel is under new ownership and has rebranded as Village Vineyards. This juicy offering, produced by Village Vineyards winemaker Rhys Evans, is a treat for anyone looking for a lighter style red wine that has been made with summer enjoyment in mind.
Blended from two parcels of estate grown syrah, it's all about uncomplicated, easy drinking and - in the classic French tradition - can be lightly chilled whenever the sun is out and friends gather. If you go down this path, don't chill it too hard; we can tell you that 10-15 minutes in the fridge is perfect.
Don't feel compelled to chill it though; it's a lovely glass of lighter-weight red at room temperature - especially in the warmer months.
The winery is keen to move their remaining Red Barrel labelled stocks, and after we tasted this lovely red, we immediately grabbed a couple of pallets. If you're looking for something deliciously different, Red Barrel Rouge comes highly recommended.
The winery writes "Havelock North grown Syrah, a clay dominant soil and plenty of sunshine has produced a wine that is perfect as a refreshing, slightly chilled, easy drinking summer option. A field blend of our two Syrah blocks, the Rouge displays bright red fruit with hints of clove and spice. The oak component gives softness and palate depth while the stainless portion provides ample fruit on the nose and freshness on the palate. "
