Red Barrel is a tiny, quality focused Hawkes Bay winery situated on the same road as Te Mata Estate and Black Barn. The winery has been sold and we have been asked by the old owners to move this parcel of wine so they can wind up their business. Red Barrel wines have been made by Black Barn's Dave McKee - a man with a gilt edged reputation for crafting fine barrel fermented Chardonnay - and this excellent 2015 release pays testament to both excellent vintage conditions and a top winemaker at the height of his powers.
Produced from handpicked fruit, this wine has been 100% barrel fermented with approx 35% new oak. It's a powerful expression with layers of creamy stonefruit and toasty oak characters sitting over a complex palate that shows perfectly handled gun flint / struck match notes. Those modern touches elevate this wine to a higher plane and we know that Dave McKee is very proud of this wine. He should be. It's fantastic; modern and classical in the same breath - and we are 100% confident that every premium Chardonnay fan who buys this wine from us will immediately recognise it as compelling value.

Raymond Chan writes "This has a full, broad and voluminous nose with a concentrated core of citrus fruits and white stonefruit aromas entwined with creamy, nutty barrel-ferment notes, a thread of youthful reduction and a little toasty oak. Medium-full bodied, the tightly bound and intense flavours of citrus and white stonefruits form a firm and fine core, unveiling creamy and nutty barrel-ferment flavours along with a little minerally reduction and oak toast. The mouthfeel is youthfully firm and fine-textured, and is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity. As the wine flows, the minerally reduction emerges and carries to a long and sustained, fine-textured finish. This is a firm and finely concentrated Chardonnay with citrus and stonefruit flavours entwined with creamy barrel-ferment, lemon curd MLF, and reductive and toasty oak notes".
