We have long admired the work of winemaker Jason Stent and his Paritua vineyard team, who year after year punch out some of the very best (and best value) red wines from the Hawkes Bay region. Scarlet 2018 is a masterclass in affordable premium styled red wine. It is brimming with vibrant dark fruits with subtle oak and a long, balanced finish. If you're looking to spend around $20 on a bottle of Hawkes Bay red, you'll go a long way to do better than this.
Scarlet 2018 is a blend of Merlot (37%), Cabernet Franc (32%), Cabernet Sauvignon (22%) and Malbec (9%).
The winery writes "This blended red is a prime example of the style produced from the gravel soils of the Paritua vineyard. The wine has scented Black Doris plum and blackberry with hints of baking spice, cedar. The palate shows dark fruits dominated by plum and blackberry with a full mid palate supported by firm, ripe tannins with a sumptuous finish. The oak influence is subtle and provides spicy notes and good structure."
Sam Kim writes "Attractively fruited and enticing, the bouquet shows spiced plum, thyme, cured meat and cedar characters. The beautifully rounded palate displays lovely weight and persistency backed by fine texture and chalky tannins, finishing long and flavoursome."
Cameron Douglas writes "Ripe, rich and demanding core of fruit and scents of oak then dark spices, some tobacco and licorice, warm stony soil moments and toasty barrel. On the palate - equally ripe, fruity and intense with flavours that mirror the bouquet from dark berries and some cassis to roasted plums, a touch of chocolate and dark spices. The stony soil moments continue. Firm tannins and medium+ acidity leave a fine texture and dusty cocoa quality on the palate. Contrasting fruit flavours and a balanced, length finish. A lovely wine ready to drink from purchase and through 2025+."
