GOLD MEDAL | Berliner Wein Trophy
Bodegas Valoria was founded by the Pérez Foncea family of Fuenmayor in 1860. It is the 6th oldest winery of the La Rioja DO. Brought into New Zealand by leading Spanish wine importer Steve Bennett MW, the 2007 Gran Reserve is a traditional blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo that has been matured for 24 months in American oak barrels (twice as long as required under Spain's strict Gran Reserva laws). It was bottle aged 36 months before release.
It's a big, mouthfilling wine with Tempranillo's naturally juicy, red-fruited charms amplified with spicy oak notes - and the wine has a lovely softness to it that can only come with time. This is yet another Steve Bennett MW wine that gets a huge tick from us. Buy with our highest recommendation.
It is a traditional blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. This is quite a rich, gutsy red with bright, fresh berry and violet flavours that dominate spicy oak influence. A backbone of moderately firm tannins balances any fruit-and-alcohol sweetness giving a dry and rather spicy finish.
