PREMIUM CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT GRIS GOING FOR A SONG
FIVE STARS 93/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
If you're a premium pinot gris fan, it's time to listen up. We've managed to secure a clearance parcel of Nanny Goat pinot gris, a wine originally only sold at the cellar door and selected restaurants in Central Otago, and we've now got it under the $20 barrier. This organic, single estate release is in stunning form; off-dry with spicy pear and stonefruit flavours with a touch of fruit sweetness on the palate that's cleaned up by a bone dry finish.
This won't last long. Pinot gris of this calibre at this price is a blue moon day and once it's gone, it's gone.
Sam Kim writes "It's delightfully fruited and inviting on the nose showing rockmelon, fresh pear, lemon peel and subtle flinty notes. The palate delivers bright fruit flavours and rounded mouthfeel, well supported by silky texture and refreshing acidity, leading to a lingering crisp finish."
The winery writes "Acacia flowers, wet river stones and freshly cut pink lady apples combine with a suggestion of short crust pastry to provide an expressively aromatic and intriguing nose. These vibrant fruit characters carry through to the palate where they are joined by spiced pear, honeydew melon and apricot. Bright acidity is delicately balanced by just a touch of residual sugar, ensuring a generous length of flavour."
