AN ICON IN THE MAKING | exciting second vintage
This is exciting Hawke's Bay Chardonnay; the second vintage of a 'passion project' chardonnay release from Clearview winemaker Matt Kirby, his wife Sarah (ex Felton Road) and filmmaker Dave Nash. Gorgeously presented in wax sealed bottles and using high quality cork closures, this is a refined and very clean chardonnay expression that walks on the fresh and vibrant side of the street. It kicks off with a hint of flinty, struck match on the nose and has tangy regional stonefruits on the palate. French oak (approx. 15% new) is evident for a light buttered toast character, but is really only there to add texture and some subtle wood spice complexity.
The beauty here is that this wine is tight but it is certainly not lean. The underlying fruit weight shines through on the palate and the finish is quite juicy and rewarding with crisp citrus notes cleaning up the conversation. We loved the 2019 and our allocation of that first release sold through in a nanosecond. The 2020 feels more generous to us and has a less reductive note than the 2019, but both releases share that gorgeuos fine acidity that drives the palate and carries those regional stonefruits.
The winery writes " Helio Chardonnay has a subtle hint of reduction on the nose, reminiscent of freshly struck flint. This gives way to juicy stone fruit and a touch of grapefruit. An attractive oyster shell mouth feel gives a pithy texture, paired with cleansing citrus and stone fruit on the palate. You’ll be going back for a second glass before you know it. A long finish of quenching bitterness and a hint of toasted vanilla from the old oak barrels makes for seriously food friendly Chardonnay."
Out of the box!
The epitome of great wine.... balance from nose to eternity!
