A STAR IS BORN
This is exciting new Hawkes Bay Chardonnay; a side project from talented Clearview winemaker Matt Kirby and wine entrepreneur Dave Nash. Gorgeously presented in wax sealed bottles and using high quality cork closures, this is a refined and very clean Chardonnay expression that walks on the fresh and vibrant side of the street. It kicks off with flinty, struck match notes on the nose and has tangy regional stonefruits on the palate. Oak is evident for a light buttered toast character but is really only there for texture and some subtle complexity.
The beauty here is that this wine is tight but it is certainly not lean. The underlying fruit weight shines through on the palate and the finish is quite juicy and rewarding with crisp citrus notes cleaning up the conversation. We loved it and immediately tried to buy every case we could. Sadly, Helio production is tiny and we only managed to score a few six packs - but that just makes it all the cooler if you are smart enough to get your hands on some.
This wine has been made to be cellared and there is no doubt that its inner secrets will be revealed in full effect over the coming 3-6 years. If drinking earlier, the Helio team recommend decanting. We agree.
The winery writes " Helio Chardonnay has a hint of reduction on the nose, reminiscent of freshly struck flint. This gives way to juicy stone fruit and a touch of grapefruit. An attractive oyster shell mouth feel gives a pithy texture, paired with cleansing citrus and stone fruit on the palate. You’ll be going back for a second glass before you know it. A long finish of quenching bitterness and a hint of toasted vanilla from the old oak barrels makes for seriously food friendly Chardonnay."
Loved it too
Right up my alley. I heard this was good and i wasn't disappointed.
