14th Best Winery in NZ - 2022. The Real Review selected the top 159 wineries in New Zealand after tasting over 10,000 wines, with Radburnd Cellars ranked as 14th. A huge achievement.
There are few more respected people in the Hawke’s Bay wine industry than Kate Radburnd. Her long tenure running Pask and numerous governance and judging roles within the industry have created a legacy that she should be extremely proud of. Now her days are spent on Radburnd Cellars - a no expense spared attempt to make the very best wines of her career. A range of elite, small batch wines are being produced, with the releases earning high praise from top wine critics.
The 2018 and 2019 chardonnay earned a huge amount of positive chatter from her senior winemaker peers - and the 2020 carries on that run. On the nose it is classic barrel fermented Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay while the palate is showing layers of creamy regional stonefruit and citrus flavours and excellent palate drive. The French oak component adds to the conversation but never dominates proceedings. The finish is very long with plenty of acidity. It’s a style that has clearly been made for the long haul, and while it is already an outstanding glass of Chardonnay, it’s real beauty will be revealed over the coming 5- 6 years. In our view, it is about as good as it gets. Bravo.

The winery writes "A bright fresh complex Chardonnay. Lemon curd abounds, some subtle leesy, mealy notes which meld beautifully with the sweet French oak. Juicy acidity lifts the citrus fruit and complements the generous weight of flavour, from ageing in barrique on full lees."
Sam Kim writes "A spectacular offering combining grace and power; the immensely appealing bouquet shows golden peach, fig, lemon sorbet and vanillin oak characters with a hint of brioche. The powerfully concentrated palate delivers both refinement and richness, brilliantly framed by bright acidity. With a symphony of seductive flavours, it’s flatteringly classy and impeccably detailed with layers of exquisite textures and flavours."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Fantastic bouquet, complex and new, a core of ripe yellow and white fleshed orchard fruit, grapefruit and lemon then layers of leesy and French oak scents. A silky-cream texture touches the palate first then a core of myriad fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet along with a sound and judicious use of oak. Fine wood tannins and a roasted nut complexity, medium+ acidity and lengthy complex finish. Fantastic wine, ready for drinking from late 2022 through 2030+."
Bob Campbell MW writes "Seamless, silken-textured chardonnay with grapefruit, citrus, nectarine, apricot, mandarin blossom, ginger and nutty barrel fermentation characters. A sophisticated, complex wine that is deliciously approachable now but promises to develop well with bottle age."
