GOLD MEDAL | New Zealand Organic Wine Awards
Classy Marlborough organic Syrah from the excellent 2016 vintage. Giesen are very proud of this release which was meticulously handled throughout its production with intense attention to detail in the both the vineyard and winery. It's a lovely, quite pretty style with underlying fruit weight and good depth.
Fruit was hand picked by block before being transferred to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed. This fruit was added to open top fermenters and cold soaked for five to seven days to enable early development of colour and flavour. The fruit was left to macerate for a further 14 days to maximise flavour before pressing. From here the free run wine was aged in French oak 300L barrels for 12 months ahead of bottling.
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Fragrant, pure, lifted aromatics of peppercorn and raspberry, dark berries and blue fruits. The scents of oak and dark spices of clove and vanilla add layers of complexity and depth. On the palate - delicious, balanced, just the right measure of oak against the backdrop of pepper and core of fruit. Tannins add in a smooth texture with a mealy edge, acidity is noticeable, but not invasive. Overall a lovely wine, balanced, lengthy and ready."
The winery writes "This limited edition organic Syrah is from the Southern Valleys, from high-density, certified organic vineyards. Every attention is lavished upon our organic vines which are hand tended, picked and sorted. An intriguing, elegant Syrah with violet floral on the nose, followed by layers of dark blackberries and juniper offset by earthy, smokey character framed by a dash of oak and spice."
