The Escarpment Single Vineyard series allows individual vineyard expression from exceptional sites within Martinborough. These wines are produced in tiny quantities are we are delighted to be able to offer our customers the chance to buy them. They are undoubtedly some of the finest, and most individual Pinot Noirs ever produced in NZ.
Kupe is the top pinot in Escarpment's line up and it sits amongst the finest pinot releases from this special growing region. This is the sixteenth release from The Escarpment Vineyard’s close planted vineyard on Te Muna Road and is a testament to the skills and expertise of Escarpment's excellent winemaking team. As always, this wine is a powerful statement and a must-have for fans of fine pinot.
Bob Campbell MW writes "Flagship wine from the Home Block, first planted in 1999. It’s a seductive pinot noir with a core of sweet, ripe plum and cherry flavours together with floral and spice noted. It’s deliciously approachable now but with cellaring potential."
Steve Bennett MW, NZ Wine Rater writes "Complex, powerful and expansive on the nose with seductive, brooding aromas of black cherry and damson plum, dark chocolate, tar, fire embers and burnt caramel oak. This is a serious, concentrated wine with unctuous fruit, layers of rich tannins and incredible length. It needs more bottle age but with airtime, it is simply wonderful."
The winery writes "Inspired by wines from Burgundy, this vineyard gives a unique opportunity for the Abel clone to express its self in a distinctive manner. A unique wine that always exhibits perfume, power, and elegance, all rolled into one exquisite package. An ideal accompaniment to any gamey red meat, duck, or New Zealand lamb."
