Elephant Hill's Icon range represent the pinnacle of their winemaking prowess. The Salomé Chardonnay made in honour of Maria Salome Ebner von Eschenbach, the famous ancestor of the Weiss family who own Elephant Hill.
Handpicked fruit from their coastal Te Awanga vineyard is gently whole bunch pressed and fermented in oak barrels, resulting in a mouthfilling, complex chardonnay from a spectacular vintage.
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Fantastic wine! A rich and complex expression delivered first through the bouquet with a core of yellow fresh stone fruit, layers of oak and nuttiness along with layers of mineral, lees and fine oak qualities. On the palate - youthful, fine, complex, and pure. A really lovely wine, distinctive and captivating with a core of fresh stone fruits and sweet citrus, lees and wood spice qualities, a great acid line and texture, lengthy finish."
Micahel Cooper writes "The memorable 2020 vintage (5*) was estate grown and hand harvested at Te Awanga and fermented and matured for a year in French oak casks (32% new). Bright, light lemon/green, it is a notably 'complete' wine, mouthfilling, very complex and savoury, with deep, ripe stone fruit flavours, finely intergrated oak, and a well-rounded, harmonious, powerful finish."
Bob Campbell MW writes "Rich, concentrated chardonnay with a strong mineral/oyster shell influence, nectarine, apple, cashew-nut, and classy oak flavours. youthful wine with good cellaring potential."
