What a deal! We have never, ever seen an Elephant Hill wine under the $20 barrier before so when the winery asked us to help them move final stocks of the current vintage of Le Phant Rouge, we jumped at the chance. This enticing blend of Hawkes Bay Merlot, Syrah and Malbec is another stellar effort from winemaker Steve Skinner and the 2016 is an immediately attractive wine with upfront juiciness and dark fruit characters that reveal layers of spice and complexity as the wine opens in the glass.
2016 was an excellent vintage for Hawkes Bay reds. This lovely wine is already in banging form but will blossom over the coming decade should you chose to lay some down.
Sam Kim writes "A gorgeous blend of merlot, syrah and malbec, the inviting bouquet shows blackcurrant, plum, vanilla, cedar and mixed spice aromas, followed by a succulent palate that is plump and silky. The wine offers excellent weight and fruit intensity, leading to a lingering smooth finish. It is rich and flavoursome with plenty of attractive flavours."
