de la terre is the winemaking venture of Tony and Kaye Prichard who have a winery, cellar door and cafe complex on the Taihape Road out of Hastings. 'de la terre' means 'of the earth' and refers to the vineyards soils as well as the earth brick construction of their buildings. They focus on creating small parcels of unique, elegant wines and grow a number of interesting varietals that are seldom seen in NZ.
This 2015 release is a fresh, lively take on viognier. Those honey and citrus notes are on show but bright acidity keeps the palate focussed and crisp.
The winery writes "A healthy straw colour which we expect to retain as the wine ages. Delicate notes of citrus blossom, quince and lychee alongside a seam of flinty minerality on the nose. On the palate, an elegant and refined balance of ripe, clean Viognier flavours and gentle acidity. Flavours of honey, lychee and light citrus dominate. The palate structure is tight and linear with a clean, crisp and long finish. Due to the very clean grapes and the specific winemaking techniques, this wine will reward careful cellaring for another 10 years or more."
