The Church Road Gwen range has been crafted in honour of Florence Gwendolen (Gwen), the wife of pioneering Church Road winemaker Tom McDonald. The wines are elegant and refined, drawing on the classic French style of winemaking that Tom McDonald was inspired by.
This 2020 Hawke's Bay Pinot Gris is vinted in a dry style with flavours in the pear and apple spectrum. It's vibrant with gorgeous texture and a subtle hint of spice. Seriously good gris from this legendary Hawke's Bay producer.
The winery writes "A dry fresh and slightly steely Pinot Gris with exceptional length and finesse on the palate. On the nose, the wine is reminiscent of ripe autumn orchard fruit, lifted by notes of honeysuckle and subtle mineral complexity providing depth and interest. While beautiful drinking now, this wine should reward cellaring for at least four years from the vintage date. Match with a range of fresh salads, seafood, poultry, and cold cuts."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Plush, fresh, ripe and fruity with a core of white fleshed tree fruits showcasing sweet pear and yellow apple, lots of honeysuckle and white spice. There’s a fine satin texture as the wine touches the palate with flavours that mirror the nose. Moderate acidity and plenty of creamy weight. Youthful and fresh with a touch of spice, ready to drink from day of purchase and through end of summer 2023."
