FIVE STARS | Huon Hooke, The Real Review
94 POINTS | Cameron Douglas MS
Chard Farm are a boutique, family-owned producer with vineyards tucked away on the shores of Lake Dunstan. They have developed a reputation for premium pinot production and their 2019 The Viper pinot has earned stellar reviews from NZ's wine critics.
Well balanced with bright red berry notes and fine tannins, this is a stunning release that will easily go 10 years in the cellar if you choose to lay some down.
The winery writes "The bouquet has intense and complex aromatics featuring alternating bursts of blue fruits, woody herbs, sweet florals and black spice. The palate features lithe fruit and fine tannins that give great expansion, energy and freshness delivering a long flavourful finish. The finely balanced fruit and acid provides great precision and clarity to an elegant wine."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "A youthful fragrant bouquet with aromas of cranberry and roses, red apple skin and cherry. There’s a quiet yet noticeable seam of stony almost silty minerality along with a fine toasty oak layer. On the palate - delicious, light-weight fruity and varietal with finely tuned flavours of red berries and apple, some dried herb and savoury mineral layers. Fine tannins with a chalky edge, plenty of acidity and a lengthy finish. A lovely example showcasing the prettier side of Pinot from this region."
Huon Hooke writes "Bright, medium to full red/purple colour, with sweet strawberry, red cherry and lightly herbal aromas, subtle use of oak, and the palate is intense and very long, with beautifully judges tannins that are supple, fine-grained and provide good structure and backbone. Sweet fruit in the centre and a cleansing dry finish. Delicious and will be even better with food.
