It's back! The long awaited return of Valcanto Syrah.
The 2015 vintage of this delicious Spanish Syrah was absolutely superb and you all seemed to agree because it flew off the shelves. We're very excited to have the 2016 vintage finally arrive and it's another belter.
It's another outstanding wine imported into New Zealand by leading Spanish wine trader Steve Bennett MW, who calls Bodegas Piqueras "One of the best value producers I’ve discovered in my 28 years in the industry. "
Sound like something very special is going on here? There definitely is. This 2016 wine from Almansa is a dark, opulent beauty with layers of mouthfilling, silken dark fruits and spicy oak complexity. Kiwi Syrah delivering this sort of concentration and depth would be $35+and after one taste you will be agreeing with that assessment 100%. Buy with our highest recommendation. Valcanto rocks.
Family owned, this is the fourth generation of the Piqueras family to have overseen the property since it was established in 1915 in Almansa, south-east Spain, some 60km from Alicante and the Mediterranean Sea, characterized by its low rainfall and poor, low-fertility limestone soils which are organically farmed. From a single estate 700-800 metres altitude and sourced from hand-harvested, 25-30 year-old, organically-farmed vines grown at 700-800m above sea level in calcareous, stony soils. Valcanto is a pure, intense, elegant expression of Syrah with delicious, natural acidity and is aged in fine-grained 300l American oak hogsheads for 6 months to give a gentle, creamy texture.
The winery writes "Medium-bodied red wine of deep colour, good balance, structure and acidity. Distinctive aromas of black plums, blueberries, blackberries, liquorice, and white pepper lead to a silky red wine with layers of fruit and subtle spices and tannins and a medium-long, smooth and lingering finish on the palate."
