When our dear friends at Black Barn approached us to move a parcel of their highly respected sauv blanc, we were all in. This cellar door / bistro legend has always been one of the Bay's best sauvignons and the 2020 continues a long history of stellar reviews from NZ's wine critics.
This is generous wine with good palate weight and flavours in the tangy citrus spectrum. Sauv Blanc's natural acidity has been handled with aplomb by winemaker Dave McKee and while it celebrates the zestiness of our most famous grape, the acidity is dialed down from the Marlborough style that dominates our domestic market. Stock is limited. Snooze and you'll loose.
The winery writes "Crisp and refreshing. Citrus florals, melon and a flinty mineral note."
Candice Chow writes "Bright, even, pale yellow. The nose is full of intense aromas of tropical guava, gooseberries, lime melded with lovage, chive and fresh-cut grass. Medium-bodied, good intensity aromas of lime, gooseberries and guava have a good core, unfolding spicy herbs of chive, lovage and herbaceous grassiness. There's a creaminess on the palate that provides balance to the mouthwatering acidity, flow smoothly with chalky, fine-textured phenolic to a refreshing finish. This is a pleasing, herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc with ripe fruit on a fine-textured palate."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Varietal, fresh, lifted and fruity bouquet with aromas of citrus and apple, some fresh peach then sage, hay and bell-pepper scents. There’s a light fine lees layer adding complexity and intrigue. Crunchy, fresh, juicy and salivating on the palate. Flavours of apple and citrus, some tropical fruits of white pineapple and lychee nut then sage and fresh herbs with a bell-pepper. Plenty of crunch and freshness from acidity with a youthful mealy texture through the palate. A tasty, ready to drink expression."
Sam Kim writes "Bright and fresh, the intensely aromatic bouquet shows green rockmelon, apple, kaffir lime and kiwifruit notes, leading to a succulent palate that's punchy and flavoursome. Wonderfully expressive and highly enjoyable."
"What a wine"
First tried this at Mister d restaurant in Napier. Beautiful wine that we use for special occasions.
