94 POINTS | Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker Wine Advocate "the 2018 La Collina Syrah is a ridiculously floral, perfumed successor to the terrific 2016"
For many commentators, La Collina is the finest expression of Hawke's Bay Syrah. The 2018 sees this important wine return after not being released in the lesser 2017 vintage, and it is another complete expression from Bilancia. The winemaking team of Warren Gibson and Lorraine Leheney write "As with most Hawke’s Bay vintages there was some rain in 2018 before the harvest of the la collina fruit. Our hillside site, with gravity and autumnal wind on its side, allows for the impact of any rain to be minimal. Skill, patience and vines and fruit in good condition before any rain means we are always well placed to see out the wet weather events.
We maintain our winemaking philosophy of trying to preserve the very distinct vineyard character and fruit purity in order that each vintage produced is a reflection of the site whilst also saying “I’m from Hawke’s Bay”. Berries and Hawke's Bay spice, weighty yet unobtrusive, fine tannins and a beautifully balanced palate. Light on its feet but not light in stature."
Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker Wine Advocate writes "While other Hawke's Bay Syrahs can marry soaring peppery spice with ripe fruit, the 2018 la collina is more jasmine, violets - maybe even roses - and subtle spices, all seamlessly blended with ripe red berries. It's just medium bodied but it's concentrated and silky in texture with a long, elegant finish and great inner-mouth perfume."
