FIVE STARS | Michael Cooper
Aurum, meaning 'liquid gold' in Latin, is a fitting description for the sublime pinot that Aurum produces. Archaeologist and orthodontist, Joan and Tony Lawrence, decided to leave their respective professions and first planted vines in Central Otago in 1997. Their son Brook inherited his parents' passion for wine, and after honing his craft in Burgundy, he returned with his French wife Lucie to run the family business. This fabulously charming and elegant pinot truly blends French flare with Kiwi terroir, and the rave reviews speak for themselves. Sublime.
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Fabulous bouquet - savoury and complex, fruity with layers of pinosity and charm. Aromas of red berries and plum centering on heirloom and wild red cherry, farmer’s market raspberry and a dried herb mineral complexity. Equally complex and interesting on the palate with a firm youthful quality drive by complex tannins and acidity and tempered by a core red fruit and barrel spice flavours. Lengthy dry finish, this is a delicious wine. Best drinking from 2023 through 2033+."
Bob Campbell MW writes "Delicious pinot noir with cassis, dark berry, plum, spice and anise flavours that are flattered by spick oak. The wine has an ethereal texture and power that’s delivered with subtlety. Dangerously accessible now but no rush."
