None too fancy is a straight to the point label from celebrated winemaker Ant McKenzie. This merlot release delivers plush, juicy, easy-drinking wine from his much admired Alluviale brand. It's all about honest, friendly, immediately enjoyable winemaking and that's exactly what you get here.
The winery writes "Deep red in colour with a purple hue. A complex savoury nose with fruit characters of plums, raspberry and cassis. Notes of butchers shop and five spice give additional interest to the aromatic profile. The palate is full bodied and rich with a toasty and savoury complexity. The spice notes are from both the fruit and the new barrels. An umami like savouriness-beef stock and mushroom-comes from a long maturation time on yeast lees without racking. Supple front palate tannins come from gentle extraction of the grape skins. These tannins help balance the fruit richness and give the wine structure without contributing hardness."
