Alchemy 2016 will go down as one of the great Advintage deals. Vigneron Neal Cave is one of Hawkes Bay's finest Chardonnay growers and his partnership with celebrated winemaker Ant McKenzie (ex Villa Maria / Spy Valley / Dry River) has produced some truly stunning wines over the years. This is one of them. Vinted from handpicked fruit and 100% barrel fermented with approx 40% new oak, this 2016 release is only now entering its ideal drinking window. It explodes on the palate with creamy flavours in the classic lemon-brulee spectrum, some toasty oak complexity and a fresh line of acidity that counters the natural fruit weight of this powerhouse wine. A very subtle touch of flinty gunsmoke on the nose adds a modern touch but this robust release is all about the beauty of tour de force Hawkes Bay Chardonnay.
Now under the $20 barrier, it is magnificent buying for fans of top quality barrel fermented Chardonnay. We'll stake our reputation on it.
Buy every case you can for immediate enjoyment or cellar over the coming 3-5 years for further gratification.
Sam Kim writes “FIVE STARS 93/100 Wonderfully fruited and complex, the bouquet shows golden peach, rockmelon, vanilla, cedar and subtle spice aromas, followed by a succulent palate that is plump and creamy. The wine offers lovely balance and harmony with excellent fruit weight and intensity, beautifully complemented by stylish oak infusion, finishing persistent and silky.”
The winery writes "Alchemy 2016 Chardonnay was created from hand-picked fruit, which was whole bunch pressed and then fermented and aged in French oak barrels for a year. The resulting wine provides a core of stonefruit, with subtle backdrop hints of vanilla and spice, which are overlaid with richness and complexity from yeast lees contact and toasty, integrated oak. The palate is succulent and creamy, providing a pure finish."
