Matua Valley Single Vineyard Matheson Merlot 2009

Back-to-back winner of the Cuisine NO. 1 Merlot. GOLD MEDAL Royal Easter Show. Matua is bucking the trend by producing these wow-factor premium wines. The results are sensational. Bravo.

"As the first back-to-back winner of Cuisine's top Kiwi merlot accolade, Matua Valley cracked it in both 2011 and 2012 with this inky, seductive wine. A magical combination with a robust dish such as merlot-braised oxtail, it has a lovely wholesome charm via a ripe complex, high-toned nose of plums, cassis , herb and pot-pourri. Succulence, concentration and balance take centre stage and it's one of the few 2009s still looking very youthful." Cuisine Magazine Sept 2012.

This Single Vineyard Merlot is crafted from vines in the Matheson vineyard, which is nestled in the apex of the Ngatawara, a sub-region of New Zealand’s sun laden Hawke’s Bay. Affectionately know as the Red Metal Triangle, this sub-region is famed for its clay (red) loamy soils overlain on a reclaimed river bed. The vines in the Matheson vineyard are over 15 years old, set up by Matua Valley’s original winemaker Mark Robinson and purchased by Matua Valley in 1997. Planted with true artisan wine crafting in mind, this vineyard is made up of several small blocks of carefully selected varieties; only the best clones of each are planted and nurtured. A further secret to Matheson’s success has been the 15 year commitment of the vineyard custodian, Andrew Stove. His intimate knowledge and passion for this vineyard has produced exceptional fruit and allowed it to fulfil it’s destiny as our most awarded vineyard.
